Anatomically, it refers to the area from the deepest central part of the auricle (the bottom of the concha) to the eardrum. The eardrum is attached at an angle of about 55 degrees to the bottom of the ear canal, so the length of the ear canal is 24 mm at the upper wall and 27 mm at the lower wall. It is also about 7 mm thick and has an oval cross section. The volume of the cavity is about 1 cubic centimeter. The overall shape is S-shaped, with the outer side curving forward and the inner side curving backward. The back two-thirds of the canal is embedded in the temporal bone, and this part is called the bony canal. The outer one-third is surrounded by cartilage, and this part is called the cartilaginous canal. The skin covering the ear canal is very thin, but the subcutaneous tissue of the cartilaginous canal wall is thick, and contains hair (ear hair) and secretory glands (ear canal glands and ear wax glands), which secrete earwax. These help protect the ear canal. [Kazuyo Shimai] [References] | |©Shogakukan "> Ear structure Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
