[Characteristics of Japanese mothers' views on child-rearing]
It has long been pointed out that parent-child relationships in Japan, particularly mother-child relationships, are very close. In "The Structure of Amae" (1971), Doi Takeo writes that when babies who have been well cared for by their mothers reach the age of about seven or eight months and begin to understand that they exist as a separate entity from their mothers, they try to return to, or at least try to approach, the previous complete state of oneness with their mother. He says that the child's attempt to re-establish this state of complete dependence is "amae."
