In his six major works since "Thoughts in Primitive Societies" (translated in Japanese as "Thoughts in Primitive Societies"), he attempted to prove the existence of a mystical and pre-logical way of thinking through a wide range of ethnographic materials. He considered this mentality, which is indifferent to the law of contradiction, to belong to a different type from Western thought in that it follows the "law of participation." In his later years, he softened this dichotomy, and in his posthumously published "Notebooks," he took a position that universally acknowledged the coexistence of the two mentalities.
