A town in Sorachi County in central Hokkaido. It occupies the headwaters of the Sorachi River, and includes Karikachi Pass to the east and Mount Yubari to the west. The Nemuro Main Line runs through the town. It has extensive virgin forests and is a major producer of timber. The flat land and mountainous hills are used for farming, and dairy farming is also practiced. There is an artificial lake, Lake Kanayama. The town centre is Ikutora. Area: 665.54 km2 . 北海道中央部,空知(そらち)郡の町。空知川水源地帯を占め,東は狩勝(かりかち)峠,西は夕張岳を含む。根室本線が通じる。原始林が広く,木材の大産地である。平たん地や山岳丘陵地帯は農耕地となっており,酪農も行う。人造湖のかなやま湖がある。中心市街地は幾寅(いくとら)。665.54km2。2814人(2010)。
