The Shogun's residence was built in Kyoto by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1378 (Tenju 4/Eiwa 4). The site was two blocks north to south and one block east to west, bounded by Yanagihara-dori to the north, Kitakoji (present-day Imadegawa-dori) to the south, Karasuma-dori to the east, and Muromachi-dori to the west. As it faced Muromachi-dori on the west side, it was also called "Muromachidono" and the Shogun who lived there also came to be called Muromachi-dono, which is how that period came to be called the Muromachi period. This land was originally the residence of Muromachi (Yotsuji) Sueaki, which was purchased by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiakira and donated to the retired Emperor Suko as the Sento Imperial Palace. However, when it burned in February 1377, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu took the opportunity to take possession of it and used it as a residence together with the residence of Kikutei Kinnao, which had also burned.
