A mountain range that runs roughly east-west along the border between France and Spain in southwestern Europe. In Spanish, it is called Pirineos. It stretches for about 440 km, with its highest peak being Pico de Aneto (3,404 m) in the central Maladetta Mountains. Formed by the Alpine orogeny, the terrain is rugged and there are many rapids. Glaciers are only found in a few areas, but glacial landforms are widely distributed. It is home to the Roncesvalles Pass (1,057 m), famous for The Song of Roland. The Perdu (Perdido) mountain area in the center was registered as a World Heritage Site (combining nature and culture) by France and Spain in 1997, and still retains the tradition of highland transhumance.

ヨーロッパ南西部，フランスとスペインとの国境をほぼ東西に走る山脈。スペイン語ではPirineos。延長約440km，最高峰は中央部マラデッタ山地のピコ・デ・アネト（3404m）。アルプス造山運動によって形成され，地形はけわしく，急流が多い。氷河はごく一部にしかないが，氷食地形は広く分布する。《ローランの歌》などで名高いロンセスバリェス峠（1057m）がある。中央部のペルデュー（ペルディド）山一帯は，1997年世界遺産（自然と文化の複合）として，フランスとスペインの共同で登録されたが，高地移牧の伝統を残している。
