A commercial city in the Punjab region of central Pakistan, near the east bank of the Chenab River. It is a distribution center for wheat, cotton, and leather, and hosts a horse market. It produces pottery, cotton and silk fabrics, and carpets. Since 1952, industrialization has been progressing due to the development of natural gas discovered nearby. It was an ancient city already known at the time of Alexander the Great's eastern expedition, and Xuanzang stopped there in 641.
