One of India's leading conglomerates, based in Kolkata (Calcutta). Founded by G.D. Birla (1894-1983), the company began cotton spinning in 1916 and was successful. It expanded into jute, sugar, and paper, and during World War II it also entered the automobile industry, becoming a major player on par with the Tata conglomerate. Birla was a friend of Mahatma Gandhi and supported the Indian National Congress' independence movement. After India's independence, it expanded into heavy industry and shipping, and grew rapidly.
