A floating perennial plant of the Potamogetonaceae (APG classification: Potamogetonaceae). It grows in colonies in shallow water less than 1 meter deep in ponds, streams, and rice paddies. It overwinters as seeds and buds at the tips of rhizomes. The rhizomes run horizontally through the mud, and produce white, thread-like roots and underwater stems from the nodes. The length of the underwater stems varies depending on the water depth, usually 10-60 cm, but sometimes as long as 3.5 m. The underwater leaves are alternate, narrowly lanceolate, and entire. The length and shape of the petiole and leaf blade vary depending on the strength of the water current. The floating leaves are smooth and glossy. From May to October, yellowish-brown spikes measuring 2-6 cm appear above the water surface. The fruits are broad ovate nuts measuring 3-4 mm long. It is known as a weed in rice paddies and is distributed in Japan and eastern Asia. The name is derived from the shape of the floating leaves, which resemble a mat on which leeches rest.
