The Story of the Kansei Sumo Wrestlers

Japanese: 寛政力士伝 - かんせいりきしでん

A story of tales. It focuses on three wrestlers, the 4th Yokozuna Tanikaze, his disciple Raiden, and Onogawa, and portrays Sanoyama's filial piety and Inagawa's chivalry. Among the more interesting are Tanikaze's seven virtues, Raiden's sealed moves, and Onogawa and Raiden's grudge sumo. Odawara's revenge sumo is still often performed today as a one-off event. Shinryusai Teisui (later known as Hayakawa Teisui, died in 1917), who famously recounted this story, was exempt from the gates to the Kokugikan Sumo Hall, and published "The Kansei Rikishi Den" in 1896 during the Teikagami era.
