The British Council. A public organization in the UK whose purpose is to promote British culture and English language education overseas. Inspired by the lively cultural activities in the Middle East of the Axis powers Germany and Italy in the early 1930s, the organization was established in 1934 at the suggestion of private citizens, and was granted legal personality by Royal Charter in 1940. Although it receives full financial support from the government, it is an independent organization and is run by a board of directors made up of representatives from various fields. With its headquarters in London, the organization cooperates with 122 branches located throughout the country and in 81 countries overseas (as of 1984) to carry out a wide range of cultural exchange activities.
