A built-in stabilizer is a device that automatically stabilizes the economy, and means that the entire economy is stabilized by factors that are systematically built into the economy. It is sometimes translated as an automatic stabilizer. For example, if the economic outlook is pessimistic and private investment declines, national income will decrease, but tax revenues (income tax, corporate tax, etc.) will also decrease automatically because they depend on income (including corporate income), and the built-in stabilizer will work to keep the decrease in consumption from decreasing too much, and the decrease in national income will be kept to a minimum.
