The Bank of England Charter Act, enacted in July 1844, is commonly known as the Peel Banking Act after the Prime Minister at the time, R. Peel. It is also called the Peel Banking Ordinance. This law can be said to have summarized the debate over the nature of the monetary and financial system (bullion debate, currency debate) and a series of banking reforms that began in earnest with the Industrial Revolution. It clearly defined the Bank of England's position as the central issuing bank and stipulated the rules for issuing banknotes, and as such had a significant impact on the subsequent development of not only the British economy but also the world economy.
