Utano

Japanese: 宇太野 - うだの

It is also written as Utano and is also called "Utano". It was one of the fields scattered at the southern foot of Kitayama on the northern edge of Heian-kyo, and spread over the area of Utano in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City today. It borders Narabigaoka to the south, Kitano to the east, and Sagano to the west. It was designated as a "land of mountain mausoleums" in the early 9th century, and contains the tombs of three emperors: Mitsutaka (died 887), Murakami (died 967), and En'yu (died 991). It was also used as a falconry ground for the imperial family along with Katano in Kawachi, and a poem by Fujiwara Ietaka about falconry is included in the "Shoku Kokin Wakashu".

宇多野とも記し，〈うたの〉ともいう。平安京の北辺，北山南麓に点在する野の一つで，現京都市右京区宇多野一帯に広がっていた。南は双ヶ丘(ならびがおか)，東は北野，西は嵯峨野に接する。９世紀初頭，〈山陵の地〉に定められ，光孝（887年没），村上（967年没），円融（991年没）３天皇の陵墓がある。また河内(かわち)の交野(かたの)とともに天皇家の鷹場とされ，鷹狩を詠んだ藤原家隆の歌が《続古今和歌集》に収められている。
