A secretary is someone whose job is to assist a Diet member in his or her work. Previously, there were two public secretaries paid for by the government, but since January 1994, it has become possible for Diet members to have a policy secretary to strengthen their policy-making abilities. In addition to these public secretaries, Diet members also have private secretaries whose expenses are paid for by the Diet member themselves. The number of private secretaries varies greatly depending on the Diet member's circumstances. For example, in the case of a first-year LDP member who belongs to the "Utopia Politics Research Association," the average number of secretaries for Tokyo combined is 3.7, and for local secretaries, 12.5. Some Diet members have six secretaries in Tokyo and 32 in local areas. Diet secretaries work closely with Diet members to manage their schedules, receive petitions on their behalf, and take care of local areas to cultivate the Diet member's base. Another important role of secretaries is to manage the Diet member's political funds.

国会議員の仕事を補佐することを任務とする秘書。国費が支払われる公設秘書は従来2名であったが，1994年1月からは議員の政策立案能力強化のため政策担当秘書を置くことが可能となった。こうした公設秘書のほか，議員自らが費用を負担する私設秘書がある。後者の数は議員の事情により大きな開きがあり，「ユートピア政治研究会」に属する自民党1年生議員の場合，両者を合わせた平均をとると東京秘書が 3.7名，地元秘書は 12.5名となっている。なかには東京に6名，地元に 32名の秘書を置いている代議士もいる。議員秘書は議員と一体となり，議員のスケジュール管理をはじめ，議員の代理として陳情を受けたり，議員の地盤培養のため地元の世話活動を行なっている。また，議員の政治資金を管理することも秘書の重要な役割である。
