A city in the central-southern part of Kanagawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1932. It faces Sagami Bay, with the Sagami River flowing south along its eastern border. The city center is on a row of sand dunes, and was a former post town on the Tokaido Highway, through which the Tokaido Main Line passes. After World War II, an industrial complex was developed around the former site of the Naval Explosives Factory. Industries such as automobiles, tires, food, metals, and machinery are thriving, and the city has achieved a manufacturing shipment value of over 1 trillion yen (2003), forming an extension of the Keihin Industrial Zone. It has become a residential area. In rural areas, horticulture, dairy farming, and other suburban agriculture are thriving. It is famous for its Tanabata Festival, the second largest in size after Sendai City in Miyagi Prefecture. 67.82 km2 . 260,780 people (2010). 神奈川県中南部の市。1932年市制。相模湾に面し,東境を相模川が南流する。中心市街は砂丘列の上にあり,東海道の旧宿場町で東海道本線が通じる。かつての海軍火薬廠跡を中心に第2次世界大戦後工業団地が造成された。自動車,タイヤ,食料品,金属,機械などの工業が盛んで,1兆円以上(2003)の製造品出荷額を上げ,京浜工業地帯の延長部を形成。住宅地化が著しい。農村部では園芸農業,酪農などの近郊農業が盛ん。七夕まつりは宮城県仙台市に次ぐ盛大さで有名。67.82km2。26万780人(2010)。
