A general term for high-grade vat dyes, including Indanthrene Blue RSN (indanthrone), obtained by alkaline fusion of 2-aminoanthraquinone. The name was derived from anthracene, meaning "indigo-like dye," and the name indanthrene later became the title for vat dyes with the highest level of fastness and beautiful color (called indanthrene grade). It was originally a registered trademark in Germany, and in Japan it is called threne dye. There are many types, including anthraquinone derivatives and condensed polycyclic quinone derivatives. The colors range from blue and green to yellow and black, and more than 130 types have been produced. However, reds have a problem, and thioindigoid dyes are included as red indanthrene dyes. Since the dye is expensive and the dyeing process is difficult, in Japan it is used for dyeing the highest quality cotton.
