...There are many horticultural varieties. In addition to the above, there are A. cissifolium (Sieb.et Zucc.) K.Koch (distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu) and A. nikoense Maxim. (same species) in Japan, which have trifoliate compound leaves, A. diabolicum Bl.ex K.Koch (same species) which has beautiful flowers in early spring, A. argutum Maxim. (Honshu, Shikoku) whose leaves resemble those of hemp, and A. aidzuense (Franch.) Nakai (Hokkaido to Kyushu) which is often found in mountain wetlands. The maple genus Acer has about 160 species distributed mainly in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere, and they are used as roadside trees and garden trees, and many of the large trees produce useful timber.
