Japanese: 薄葬 - はくそう

The simplification of funerals in order to save money and reform customs. Such orders are called the "Simple Funeral Order." In China, such orders have been issued since ancient times as imperial wills, but in Japan, the most famous one was issued during the Taika Reforms in 646 (the second year of the Taika era), which restricted the size of tombs, the number of people and days of labor, and grave goods according to the status of the person in the imperial court. However, some say that the purpose of this order was to prohibit the mobilization of citizens for private purposes, and that it should be seen as a public funeral order rather than a simple funeral order.

経費節約や風俗改正を目的として葬儀を簡素化すること。その命令を薄葬令という。中国で古くから皇帝の遺言などとして公布されたが，日本では大化改新の際のものが著名で，646年（大化２年）の薄葬令では，朝廷での身分に応じて，墳墓の大きさ，労務の人員と日数，副葬品などを規制した。しかしこれは，公民を私用に動員するのを禁ずるのが目的で，薄葬令というより公葬令とみるべきだとの説もある。
