When individuals or companies try to make decisions or business policies, there are often many uncertain conditions, and they must take these into account appropriately to make a good decision and act. A theory that uses statistical considerations to evaluate which of the available actions is actually best is called decision theory or "statistical decision theory." This theory first lists the actions that can be taken, and also lists the possible outcomes (called "states") of uncertain conditions. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
