[Died] January 7, 1619, London. British miniature painter. He lived in London and excelled in metalwork and portrait painting. He painted portraits at the court of Elizabeth I. His son, Lawrence (c. 1582-1640), also became a painter, but his student I. Oliver is better known. 27 of his works are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He is the author of Treatise on Arte of Limning (c. 1600).

[Died] 1640. London. British miniature (small portrait) painter. Son of N. Hilliard, a famous 16th-17th century miniature painter, he trained under his father and mainly painted miniatures. After his father's death in 1619, he succeeded him as court portrait painter and produced many portraits of royalty and nobility. His style was stiffer than his father's, but his colors were richer and more varied. His major works are two "Portraits" (1636, 1638, Beauchamp Collection).

イギリスのミニアチュール (小型肖像画) 画家。 16～17世紀の有名なミニアチュールの画家 N.ヒリアードの子で，父のもとで修業し主としてミニアチュールを描いた。 1619年の父の死後，宮廷肖像画家の地位を受継ぎ，数多くの王侯貴族の肖像画を制作。作風は父よりも生硬であるが，色彩はより豊富で変化がある。主要作品『肖像画』2点 (1636，38，ボーシャン・コレクション) 。
