Gas Hydrates

In addition to this normal structure of ice, several types of ice with higher densities and different crystal shapes are formed under high pressure. When gases such as chlorine, methane, and propane are cooled with water under high pressure, gas hydrates such as Cl ₂ ･7.7H ₂ O, CH ₄ ･5.7H ₂ O, and C ₃ H ₈ ･17H ₂ O are formed. In these, the water molecules form a birdcage-like structure through hydrogen bonds, trapping the gas molecules inside. This is a type of clathrate compound.
