Stefan Banach

Stefan Banach

Polish mathematician. One of the founders of functional analysis. Born in Krakow, which was then part of Austria. Finished middle school in Krakow in 1910, he studied at the Technical University in Lvov until 1914, but returned to Krakow with the outbreak of World War I, where he continued his research in mathematics. In 1920, he became an assistant professor at Lvov University, where he completed his doctoral thesis. This was the thesis that defined today's "Banach space" and investigated its properties. Although he did not write a master's thesis, he was given a doctorate through special arrangements, and in 1924 he became a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1929, in collaboration with Hugo Steinhaus (1887-1972), he founded the specialized journal for functional analysis, Studia Mathematica , which has become one of the internationally acclaimed journals today.

In addition to his research on Banach spaces and linear operators thereon, he also carried out many important works in the theory of trigonometric series, orthogonal functions, measure theory, and real functions, among which the Hahn–Banach theorem and the Banach–Steinhaus theorem are some of the most important and fundamental results in functional analysis. His Théorie des opérations linéaires (1932) was the world's first comprehensive work on functional analysis.
