Father of the Western Church. Born in Poitiers, Gaul, he initially aspired to be a philosopher, but converted to Christianity and became bishop of the area (around 350). He is known as the "Athanasius of the West" for participating in the Arian controversy and conveying its significance to the Western Church. He is also similar to Athanasius in his emphasis on the divinity of Christ. He wrote On the Council and On the Trinity, the latter of which was the first full-scale doctrinal work in the Western Church and had a great influence on Augustine. He is also known for his four-volume Commentary on the Psalms and for composing the first hymn lyrics.

西方教会の教父。ガリアのポアティエに生まれ，はじめ哲学を志したが，キリスト教に回心して，この地の司教となった(350ころ)。アリウス派論争に加わり，その意義を西方教会に伝えたことで〈西方のアタナシオス〉と呼ばれる。キリストの神性を強調したこともアタナシオスに近い。《公会議について》《三位一体論》の著書がある。後者は西方教会最初の本格的な教義学の書で，アウグスティヌスに大きな影響を与えた。4巻の《詩篇注解》および最初の賛美歌作詞によっても知られる。
