315 koro-367 Father of the Western Church. Born in Poitiers, Gaul, he initially aspired to be a philosopher, but converted to Christianity and became bishop of the area (around 350). He is known as the "Athanasius of the West" for participating in the Arian controversy and conveying its significance to the Western Church. He is also similar to Athanasius in his emphasis on the divinity of Christ. He wrote On the Council and On the Trinity, the latter of which was the first full-scale doctrinal work in the Western Church and had a great influence on Augustine. He is also known for his four-volume Commentary on the Psalms and for composing the first hymn lyrics. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
