Humans live within social groups known as populations, but these populations are constantly changing due to many factors, and the population captured within these changes is called demographics. The factors that cause these changes include natural increases and decreases due to births and deaths, social increases and decreases due to in-migration and out-migration, and changes in affiliation due to marriage and divorce, and as these are required by a reporting system, vital statistics are compiled based on these changes. As a sales document, while static population is the basic figure for estimating the size of a market, demographics are the basic data showing the structure of the population.

人間は、それぞれ人口という社会集団の中で生活しているのであるが、この人口は多くの要因によって常に変化しており、この変化の中でとらえられた人口を人口動態と呼ぶ。変化の要因は、出生・死亡による自然増減、転入・転出による社会増減、結婚・離婚による所属変化があり、これらは届出制度によって義務づけられているので、この変化をもとに人口動態統計が作成されている。販売資料としてみると、静態人口が市場の規模を推計する基礎数値であるのに対し、この人口動態は、人口の構造を示す基礎的資料となる。
