…A temple located in the north of the Athenian Acropolis. The name Erechtheion first appeared in the writings of the traveler Pausanias in the 2nd century AD, and before that it was called the Old Temple of Athena (Polias). It has such an ancient history that it was mentioned in Homer. Construction of the current structure began around 421 BC, and after several years of interruption, it was completed around 406 BC. It is a masterpiece among the existing Ionic temples, but the architect is unknown. Due to the geographical conditions of the uneven ground (the eastern half is 3m higher) and the need to accommodate many sacred sites and ancient rituals, a very complex plan was adopted, and the entire building is unified in the Ionic style with delicate decorations. …
