A prefecture in the southeastern part of the Kinki region. Its capital is Tsu City. It has an area of 5,774.40 km2 and a population of 1,854,724 (2010). [History] It occupies the northeastern part of the former Ise, Iga, and Shima provinces, as well as Kii province. It is close to the Kinai region, and was developed since ancient times, with Ise Grand Shrine being enshrined there. Suzuka Barrier was a key transportation point to Kinai. In the early modern period, many castle towns were built, including Tsu, and Tsu (Anotsu) and Ominato flourished as port towns, and post towns developed along the Tokaido and Sangu Kaido roads. During the Edo period, it was divided into the territories of the Todo clan, the Kii Tokugawa clan, small feudal domains, the Tenryo domain, and the Jingu domain. In 1871, it became Anotsu Prefecture and Watarai Prefecture, the former of which was renamed Mie Prefecture the following year, and in 1876, it was merged with Watarai Prefecture to form the current prefectural boundaries. [Nature] The area is long and narrow from north to south, and is divided into two parts, the northern inner belt and the southern outer belt, by the valley of the Kushida River, which is the Median Tectonic Line that runs east to west through the center. In the northern part, the Suzuka Mountains, a hilly plateau, and the Ise Plain facing Ise Bay run parallel from north to south from the west, with the Ueno Basin to the west of the Suzuka Mountains and the Nunobiki and Takami mountains to the south. The southern part is mostly mountainous, with the Kii Mountains and little flat land, and a typical ria coast has developed facing the Kumano Nada Sea. The topography of the Shima Peninsula in the east is varied, with uplifted sea-eroded plateaus, drowned valleys, and sea cliffs. The southern part has a hot and humid Nankai climate, and the Owase region is the rainiest area in Japan. The northern part has a Pacific coastal climate with dry winters. [Industry] The population composition by industry is 4.9% primary, 33.2% secondary, and 60.4% tertiary (2005). Paddy fields account for 76.5% of the total cultivated land area (2003), and rice-based agriculture is mainly carried out in the Ise Plain and Ueno Basin. Wheat, sweet potatoes, tea, and seedlings are also produced in abundance, and Ise radishes are grown in the Miyagawa River basin, mandarin oranges are grown along the Kumano Nada coast, and Matsusaka beef is raised near Matsusaka. Forests cover about two-thirds of the prefecture's area, and the west and south produce high-quality cedar, cypress, and pine trees, and shiitake mushrooms are also produced in abundance. In the fishing industry, the prefecture has a long coastline of about 970 km and has developed good fishing ports in various places. A variety of fisheries are available, including bonito, yellowtail, sardines, and horse mackerel fishing in the Kumano Nada Sea, seaweed in Ise Bay, clams and spiny lobsters along the Kuwana coast, yellowtail farming south of Gokasho Bay, pearl farming on the Shima Peninsula, and abalone and turban shell harvesting by female divers. The Ise Bay coast, centered on Yokkaichi, has developed significantly as an extension of the Chukyo Industrial Zone, and industries such as transportation equipment, petrochemicals, shipbuilding, woolen textiles, glass, cement, chemical fertilizers, and machinery are all found here. After the opening of the Ise Expressway, factories related to cutting-edge technology such as electrical equipment have been actively established in the Chunansei region. Traditional industries include foundry in Kuwana and Banko ware in Yokkaichi. There are many tourist spots in Ise-Shima National Park, such as Ise Grand Shrine and Ago Bay, Mt. Odaigahara, Doro Gorge, and Osugi Gorge in Yoshino-Kumano National Park, Mt. Gozaisho and Yunoyama Onsen in Suzuka Quasi-National Park, and Akame 48 Waterfalls, Kochidani, and Aoyama Plateau in Muroo-Akame-Aoyama Quasi-National Park. In 1994, the theme park Shima Spain Village opened in Shima. In 2004, the sacred sites and pilgrimage routes in the Kii Mountain Range were registered on the list of cultural heritage under the World Heritage Convention (Kumano Pilgrimage Routes). [Transportation] The northern part of the prefecture and the Shima Peninsula area are well connected by the Kansai Main Line, Sangu Line, Kisei Main Line, Kintetsu Osaka Line, Kintetsu Nagoya Line, Sangi Railway, Ise Railway, National Highways 1 and 23, the Tomei-Osaka Expressway, the Meihan Expressway, and the Ise Expressway, but transportation in the southern part of the prefecture is inconvenient in the mountainous areas, except along the Kisei Main Line and National Highway 42. There are boat services from Toba Port to Misozaki, Irago Cape, and other areas. → Related topics Kinki region | Hand-kneaded sushi Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
