Hirano Festival - Hirano Festival

Japanese: 平野祭 - ひらのまつり
Hirano Festival - Hirano Festival
This is the annual festival of Hirano Shrine, located in Kita Ward, Kyoto City. Since the Heian period, it has been held every year on the days of petition in April and November. It is specified as a minor festival in the Engishiki. The origin of the festival is said to be either during the Enryaku to Kōnin era (782-824) or the Jinju to Jōgan era (851-877), but it is unclear. As a festival to pray for the protection of the Imperial Family, the Kōninshiki stipulates that the Crown Prince himself attends and makes an offering. The Engishiki adds a provision that members of the Oe and Yamato clans, Emperor Kanmu's maternal grandparents, attend the festival.
