Liu Changqing - Liu Changqing

Japanese:
Liu Changqing - Liu Changqing

A Chinese poet from the mid-Tang Dynasty to the mid-Tang Dynasty. His pen name was Wenbo. He was from Hejian (Hebei Province). He lived in Songyang (Henan Province) when he was young. He was a Jinshi (official scholar) during the Tianbao period (742-755). In his later years, he became the governor of Suizhou (Hubei Province), hence the name Liu Suizhou. He was stubborn and arrogant, and when he wrote his poems, he signed only "Changqing" out of pride in his fame. He rebelled against those in power, and was demoted twice. He excelled in five-character poetry, and was called the "Great Wall of five-character poetry." Although his lines are marked by the same expressions, his descriptions of the countryside and landscapes are regarded as being in the style of Tao Yuanming, Wang Wei, and Meng Haoran. He wrote the "Liu Suizhou Collection" in 10 volumes, and the "External Collection" in one volume.
