Warty - Warty

A marine animal belonging to the phylum Coelenterata, class Anthozoa, subclass Hexacorallia, order Scleractinia, family Xantholidae. It is widely distributed in the Pacific Ocean south of Sagami Bay. The colonies are low masses or shells, and the capsules are circular and 6-8 mm in diameter, but are mostly buried in the common base and protrude only 4-5 mm above the surface. The septa develop up to four rows, but the fourth row is vestigial. The septa in the outer cavity are always smaller than those in the inner cavity. The coenchyma covering the surface is bright crimson-orange, and the tentacles are yellow. It grows on the cliff faces and undersides of rocky reefs up to about 20 meters from the low tide line. The sea slugs, which are often found on the colonies, feed on the coenchyma. Closely related species include T. coccinea , which is larger than T. coccinea, and T. robusta , which has pods arranged radially and smaller individuals arranged in pairs on either side of each pod.

腔腸(こうちょう)動物門花虫綱六放サンゴ亜綱イシサンゴ目キサンゴ科に属する海産動物。相模(さがみ)湾以南の太平洋に広く分布する。群体は低い塊状あるいは殻皮状で、莢(きょう)は円形で直径6～8ミリメートルであるが、おおむね共同基部に埋まり、表面からわずか4～5ミリメートル突出するだけである。隔壁は4環列まで発達するが、第4環列は痕跡(こんせき)的。外腔(がいこう)にある隔壁は内腔にある隔壁よりつねに小さい。表面を覆う共肉は鮮かな朱橙(しゅとう)色で、触手は黄色である。低潮線付近より20メートルぐらいまでの岩礁の崖(がけ)面や岩棚の下面に着生する。群体上にはしばしばイボヤギミノウミウシがみつかり、共肉を食べている。近縁種にイボヤギより大形のオオイボヤギT. coccineaや、莢が放射状に並びさらにそれぞれの両側に小さい個体が左右対をなして並ぶエダイボヤギT. robustaがある。
