Armenian Literature - Armenian Literature
Oral literature existed before the invention of the Armenian alphabet by St. Mesrop in the early 5th century, but none of it has survived to the present day. From the 5th century onwards, cultural activities were limited to the clergy for a long time, including Moses, who wrote "The History of Armenia", St. Grigor Narekatsi, and Archbishop Shinorali. Armenian culture split into East and West after the 12th century, and went into a long period of decline after the invasion of Timur at the end of the 14th century. From the 16th to 18th centuries, minstrels appeared, with Naabet Kuchak and Altin Sayadyan (Sayat-Nova) being prominent. In the 19th century, poets such as H. Tumanyan, novelists such as EL Otiyan, K. Abobiyan, and H. Melik-Hakobyan (pen name Rafi), and playwrights such as H. Paronyan and G. Sundukyan were active.
