Chikayoshi Hiraiwa

Japanese: 平岩親吉 - ひらいわちかよし
Chikayoshi Hiraiwa

A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods. Commonly known as Shichinosuke and Kazue no Kami. Born in the same year as Tokugawa Ieyasu, he served Tokugawa Ieyasu from an early age, fighting in various places. He became a tutor for Ieyasu's eldest son, Nobuyasu, but in 1579 (Tensho 7) he was forced to retire for a time when Nobuyasu committed seppuku. In 1590 he became the lord of Umayabashi Castle in Kozuke Province, with a fief of 33,000 koku. He adopted Ieyasu's eighth son, Senchiyo, but died young. After the Battle of Sekigahara, he became the lord of Kofu Castle (fiscal territory of 63,000 koku). He became a tutor to Ieyasu's ninth son, Yoshinao, and when Yoshinao was transferred from Kofu to Kiyosu, he became the lord of Inuyama Castle (123,000 koku, some say 93,000 koku), and continued to rule the territory.
