British politician. He was made a viscount for his efforts in the Restoration of the monarchy. He was a member of the Privy Council in 1672. He opposed the movement to exclude James II, Duke of York, and became Lord Keeper of the Great Seal. However, after James II ascended to the throne, he criticized the king's tyranny and was dismissed in 1685. He supported the Glorious Revolution and served as Lord Keeper of the Great Seal again under William III. He called himself "Trimmer the Opportunist" and wrote a book called The Character of an Opportunist (1688), but his forte was always to reject extreme opinions and to take a middle path between the Tories and Whigs. However, he disliked the fierce conflict between the two parties and resigned from his post in 1690.

英国の政治家。王政復古に尽力して子爵を授けられる。1672年枢密院議員。ヨーク公ジェームズ(のちの２世）排斥運動に反対し，国璽尚書になる。しかしジェームズ２世の即位後は国王の専制支配を批判して1685年解任された。名誉革命を支持し，ウィリアム３世のもとでふたたび国璽尚書として補佐にあたった。みずから〈日和見主義者Trimmer〉と称して《日和見主義者の性格》（1688年)という著作を著しているが，その本領とするところは，つねに極論を排して，トーリー，ホイッグの中道をとることにあった。しかし両党の激しい抗争を嫌い，1690年職を辞して引退した。
