This is Osaka's representative main road that runs north to south through the center of Osaka city. It starts from Nankai Electric Railway's Namba Station, passes through Shimanouchi, Senba, Nakanoshima, and Dojima, and ends at JR Osaka Station. It is about 4 kilometers long and 44 meters wide. It was completed in 1937 (Showa 12). The subway Midosuji Line runs underground. It was named after Minami-Mido (Higashi Honganji Namba Betsuin) and Kita-Mido (Honganji Tsumura Betsuin) that are located along the road. Ginkgo trees are planted along the road, and high-rise buildings of banks, trading companies, various halls, and offices are lined up. In order to create a harmonious streetscape, a height limit of 31 meters was set for buildings, but this limit was relaxed in 1995 (Heisei 7). In preparation for the 1970 World Expo, the road was extended 18.8 kilometers north to Shiba in Minoh City and called Shin-Midosuji (National Route 423).
