Pilonidal sinus

Pilonidal sinus
Also called pilonidal fistula. A chronic, purulent-draining sinus that occurs subcutaneously in the sacrococcygeal region of the lower back. Although congenital cases are known, it is usually acquired and is thought to occur when hair is pushed subcutaneously by friction or pressure, forming a cyst-like shape. Congenital causes are rare, at about 10%. The male-female ratio is 3:1, and it is more common in men and in hairy people. It is more common in Caucasians, but less common in Asians and blacks. It is also called jeep disease because it was common among military personnel who often drove jeeps.
