Japanese: 断面積の法則 - だんめんせきのほうそく（英語表記）area rule

Also known as the area rule. This law clarifies the relationship between the wave resistance that occurs when an airplane flies faster than the speed of sound and the shape of the aircraft, especially the distribution of its cross-sectional area. It was announced in 1952 by Richard Whitcomb of NACA (now NASA). The discovery of this law made it possible to reduce wave resistance, making supersonic flight easier. When an airplane travels at high speed and the airflow around the aircraft exceeds the speed of sound, shock waves are generated, resulting in large wave resistance.

エリアルールともいう。飛行機が音速を超えて飛行するときに発生する造波抵抗と機体の形状，とくにその断面積の分布の関係をあきらかにした法則。NACA(現在のNASA（ナサ）)のホイットカムRichard Whitcombが1952年に発表した。この法則の発見によって造波抵抗を減少させることができ，超音速飛行が容易になった。飛行機が高速になり，機体の周囲の気流が音速を超えると，そこに衝撃波が発生し，大きな造波抵抗が生ずる。
