[由来] 必ず並んで飛ぶという、中国に古くから伝わる伝説上の鳥のこと。たとえば、「爾雅―釈地」には、南方に住む「ならばざれば飛ばざる(二羽一緒でなければ飛べない)」鳥として記述があり、その注には、「いちもくいちよくにて、あいすなわち飛ぶ(目も翼も一羽に一つずつしかなく、つがいの二羽が一体となって飛ぶ)」とあります。また、八~九世紀、唐王朝の時代の中国の詩人、はくきょ(号は楽天)が、ある皇帝と絶世の美女、ようの悲恋をうたった「ちょうごん」という作品で、二人に「天に在りては願わくは比翼の鳥とり、地に在りては願わくは連理の枝とらん(空を飛ぶ比翼の鳥のように、大地から生える連理の枝のようになりましょう)」と誓わせているのが、有名です。なお、「連理の枝」とは、別々の木の枝がつながって、一本になったものをいいます。

[解説] 「長恨歌」は、美女が死んでしまうという悲恋物語。そのため、「比翼」には悲劇的なイメージがつきまとうことがあります。悲恋の末に亡くなった男女の墓を「比翼塚」と呼ぶことが多いのは、このためです。
