… In 1910, the American couple Irene Castle and Vernon C. Castle introduced the first dance to jazz accompaniment, danced in a natural style with the feet moving from the heels, the same as normal walking, which they named the “foxtrot.” Until then, dancers had moved from the toes, but the “castle walk” that the Castles invented became the basis of modern ballroom dancing. The blues also follows this trend, and Florence Barthel of England invented the “quick step,” which is even faster than the foxtrot. …
