Also known as thermocolor or chameleon paint. A special paint that changes color clearly at a specific temperature, it is one of the thermometric materials used to measure the surface temperature of objects. Depending on the characteristics of the pigment, there are irreversible ones that do not return to their original color even when cooled, and reversible ones that return to their original color when cooled. Irreversible pigments are compounds of cobalt, nickel, iron, copper, chromium, manganese, etc. that contain ammine or ammonium groups, carbonate groups, water of crystallization, etc. in their composition and change their composition due to chemical changes such as thermal decomposition. Reversible pigments include Ag ₂ HgI ₄ , Cu ₂ HgI ₄ , and Ag ₂ HgI ₄ -Cu ₂ HgI ₄ solid solutions. The color change temperature ranges from below 50°C to around 800°C. It was widely used for overheating prevention signals for electric motors and bearings, and for measuring the surface temperature of heated objects, but its use has decreased due to the development of temperature sensor technology.

サーモカラー，カメレオン塗料とも。特定の温度で明瞭な変色をする特殊な塗料で，物体の表面温度測定を目的とする測温材料の一つ。顔料の特性により，冷却しても元の色に戻らない不可逆性のものと，冷却すると元の色に戻る可逆性のものとがある。不可逆性顔料としてはコバルト，ニッケル，鉄，銅，クロム，マンガンなどの化合物で，組成中にアンミンまたはアンモニウム基，炭酸基，結晶水などを含み，熱分解などの化学的変化により組成が変わるものが用いられ，可逆性顔料としてはAg₂HgI₄，Cu₂HgI₄，Ag₂HgI₄・Cu₂HgI₄固溶体などが用いられる。変色温度は50℃以下のものから800℃くらいのものまである。電動機，軸受などの過熱防止信号，加熱物の表面温度測定などに広く利用されたが，温度センサー技術の開発により使用は減少した。
