Quietism

Japanese: キエティスム

A French word translated as "Quietism." A Christian mystical thought that preaches the path to seeing God and perfection through complete passivity, particularly that of the Spanish Molinos, the French Madame Guyon and Fenelon. A similar idea is the Hesychasmos that was popular among the monks of Mount Athos in the late Byzantine period, and which is also sometimes called Quietism.

〈静寂主義〉と訳されるフランス語。徹底した受動性のうちに見神と完徳への道を説くキリスト教神秘思想で，特にスペインのモリノス，フランスのギェイヨン夫人，フェヌロンらのそれをいう。類似のものにビザンティン時代末期，アトス山の修道士のあいだで盛行した〈ヘシュカスモス〉があり，これも静寂主義と称されることがある。
