Steel sheets whose surfaces are plated or coated for purposes such as corrosion resistance, durability, strengthening, or aesthetic beauty. Galvanized iron sheets coated with zinc and tinplate sheets coated with tin are produced by electroplating or immersing the steel sheet in molten metal. Enamels, which are produced by fusion coating a glassy glaze at temperatures below 1000°C, include glass lining, which has good corrosion resistance, and ceramic coating, which has good heat resistance. Advances in synthetic resin coating technology have made it possible to produce resin-coated steel sheets with beautiful corrosion resistance, and those with baked-on coatings also have excellent heat resistance.

耐食・耐久・強化・外観美化などの目的で表面に鍍金 (めっき) ，被膜などした鋼板。亜鉛を被膜したトタン板，錫を塗膜したブリキ板は鋼鈑を電気鍍金または溶融金属の中に浸して被膜する。ガラス質の釉 (うわぐすり) を 1000℃以下で融着被膜した琺瑯 (ほうろう) には，耐食性が良いガラスライニングと耐熱性が良いセラミックコーティングとがある。合成樹脂を被膜する技術が進んだので，耐食性の美しい樹脂被膜鋼板が作られるようになり，焼付け被膜したものは耐熱性にも優れている。
