Flame surface

...Such flame propagation in a flammable atmosphere actually occurs in the cylinders of automobile engines and in gas explosions inside buildings. In addition, these flame propagation phenomena are considered to be a phenomenon in which a narrow heat pulse moves through space, so they are sometimes likened to waves and called combustion waves, and the front of the flame is called the flame front, following the wave front. Furthermore, when the flame propagation is significantly accelerated, a shock wave is accompanied by the flame front, which is called a detonation or detonation, and shows completely different characteristics from the flame propagation mentioned above (see the section on explosions).
