A mammal of the Felidae family in the carnivora order. Body length is 100-190 cm, tail 70-95 cm. It has black spots on a yellow to yellowish brown background. It is found in sub-Saharan Africa and central and southern Asia. It lives alone in forests and rocky areas, and ambushes and captures deer, antelope, monkeys, etc. It pulls uneaten carcasses up into trees to protect them from being eaten by other animals. It has 1-6 babies in one litter. It appears in villages, kills sheep and cattle, and sometimes attacks people. There are many black panthers of the black variety in the Malay region.
