…A skilled orator, he contributed to the American anarchist movement. Together with his Russian-born comrade Alexander Berkman (1870-1936), he edited and published the magazine Mother Earth (1906-17). In his writings and lectures, he discussed social issues such as free love, birth control, and labor problems, as well as literature, especially theater, which garnered widespread attention. In 1917, he was sentenced to two years in prison for his anti-war activities, and in 1919, he and Berkman were deported and sent back to Russia. …
