Born: 1874. Yamagata
Died in 1964. Tokyo education scholar. Graduated from the Department of Philosophy, College of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University in 1900. Studied ethics and education at graduate school. Became professor at the Women's Higher Normal School and Tokyo Normal School in 1904, and studied abroad in Germany and France. After returning to Japan, he served as assistant professor at the University of Tokyo, and in 1916 became professor at the University of Tokyo, where he was in charge of education courses and trained many education scholars. He played a central role in compiling moral education textbooks, and was a member of the Provisional Education Council and the Council for Cultural Affairs, a member of the National Institute for Japanese Spiritual Culture, and after retiring from the university, he was active as professor emeritus and head of the research department of the National Institute for Japanese Spiritual Culture. His many books include Educational Ethics (1910), Criticism of Contemporary Educational Thought (15), and Educational Theory and the Spirit of Our Nation (34).

教育学者。 1900年東京帝国大学文科大学哲学科卒業。大学院で倫理学，教育学を研鑽。 04年女子高等師範学校兼東京師範学校教授となり，ドイツ，フランスに留学。帰国後，東京大学助教授を兼任，16年東京大学教授となり，教育学講座を担当，多くの教育学者を育てた。修身教科書の編集に中心的役割を果したほか臨時教育会議，文政審議会幹事，国民精神文化研究所所員，大学退官後は名誉教授，国民精神文化研究所研究部長として活躍。著書『教育的倫理学』 (1910) ，『現今教育思潮批判』 (15) ，『教育学説と我が国民精神』 (34) など多数。
