Erwin Bünning

1906‐1990
German plant physiologist and pioneer in biological clock research. He became a professor at the University of Königsberg in 1939, and then served as a professor at the University of Tübingen from 1946 to 1972. After graduating from the University of Göttingen, he studied the movement of plant leaves in the dark at the Institute of Medical Basic Physics at the University of Frankfurt, where he confirmed that they have a circadian rhythm that is roughly daily (1929). He also studied the endogenous rhythm of the emergence of fruit flies, and proposed the hypothesis that biochemical reactions within the body are the basis for determining daily rhythms (1936).

ドイツの植物生理学者。生物時計研究の先駆者。1939年ケーニヒスベルク大学教授，ついで46年から72年までチュービンゲン大学教授をつとめる。ゲッチンゲン大学卒業後，フランクフルト大学医学基礎物理研究所で，暗所の植物の葉の運動を調べ，ほぼ1日の概日周期(サーカディアンリズム)があることを確認した(1929)。ショウジョウバエの羽化の内因リズムなどをも研究し，体内の生化学反応が基礎となって日周リズムを定めるという仮説を提出した(1936)。
