1906‐1990 German plant physiologist and pioneer in biological clock research. He became a professor at the University of Königsberg in 1939, and then served as a professor at the University of Tübingen from 1946 to 1972. After graduating from the University of Göttingen, he studied the movement of plant leaves in the dark at the Institute of Medical Basic Physics at the University of Frankfurt, where he confirmed that they have a circadian rhythm that is roughly daily (1929). He also studied the endogenous rhythm of the emergence of fruit flies, and proposed the hypothesis that biochemical reactions within the body are the basis for determining daily rhythms (1936).
