Tan Malaka

Japanese: タン・マラカ(英語表記)Tan Malaka
Tan Malaka
1897‐1949
Indonesian thinker and revolutionary. Born into a devout Muslim family in West Sumatra, he studied in the Netherlands in 1913. During his stay, he was exposed to World War I and the Russian Revolution, which deepened his inclination towards socialism and his goal of liberating his homeland. After returning to Indonesia, he worked as a teacher before joining the Indonesian Communist Party, and in 1921 he became its chairman and led the anti-colonial struggle, but was expelled the following year. From then until his return to Indonesia in 1942, he worked in the Soviet Union, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and other countries, first as a Comintern agent, and in 1927 he founded the Indonesian Republic Party to replace the Communist Party, which had been destroyed in an armed uprising, and ran its own movement.
