345 or 346-399 Christian theologian. Born in Pontus in Asia Minor. He was ordained in Constantinople and participated in the Ecumenical Council of 381. He later traveled to Egypt via Jerusalem, and lived a monastic life in the desert for the rest of his life. He spread the ideas of monastic life through his many writings (some of which still survive). He was suspected of Origenism by Jerome, and was denounced as an Origenist from the 6th century onwards, but in recent years there has been a movement to reevaluate his views.
