Christian theologian. Born in Pontus in Asia Minor. He was ordained in Constantinople and participated in the Ecumenical Council of 381. He later traveled to Egypt via Jerusalem, and lived a monastic life in the desert for the rest of his life. He spread the ideas of monastic life through his many writings (some of which still survive). He was suspected of Origenism by Jerome, and was denounced as an Origenist from the 6th century onwards, but in recent years there has been a movement to reevaluate his views. [Tatsuya Moriyasu]

キリスト教神学者。小アジアのポントス出身。コンスタンティノープルで聖職につき，381年の公会議に参加。のちエルサレムを経てエジプトに行き，終生砂漠で修道生活を続けた。多数の著作(一部現存)によって修道生活の理念を伝えた。ヒエロニムスによってオリゲネス主義の疑いをかけられ，6世紀以降オリゲネス主義者として弾劾されたが，近年では再評価の動きがでている。【森安達也】
