Oromo people. A general term for the Cushitic-speaking peoples who live in the highlands of southern Ethiopia and the foothills of Somalia and Kenya. They have the largest population in Ethiopia, estimated at about 20 million. In the past, they lived in a limited area on the southern edge of the Ethiopian plateau, but in the 16th century, they advanced to the central and western parts of the Ethiopian plateau. The peoples in the southwest, such as the Borana and Arsi, live traditional pastoral lifestyles and have relatively well maintained their traditional religion and age group system called Gada. The peoples in the northeast are mixed with the Amhara and Sidamo peoples, and live settled agriculturally. Many of them are Christian or Islamic religious, and their traditional culture has changed compared to the pastoral Gara.
