...A city on the Dalmatian coast in southern Croatia, and the country's largest tourist destination. Italian name: Ragusa. Population: 50,000 (1991). The origins of the town date back to the early 7th century, when fugitives from a nearby Roman city destroyed by the Slavs settled on the southern part of the Stradun boulevard that now divides the city (on what was then a small island) and named it Ragusium.
